In the week of the reissue of his debut album Free Me, JP Bimeni is unveiling the video of his collaboration with Moby. Composed, performed and produced by Moby with lyrics and vocals by JP Bimeni, the track ‘Should Sleep’ was released on September 13th 2023 on Moby’s ‘Always Centered At Night’ label. JP’s soulful vocals are enhanced by the unique groove of Moby’s production.
When his debut album Free Me released in 2018, Burundian-born J.P. Bimeni captivated the public with a voice that recalled Otis Redding in his prime whilst resonating with the soul of Africa. The album is being reissued enhanced by three bonus tracks: his version of the Spencer Davis Group’s Keep on Running previously released as a 7” single, an instrumental also released only on vinyl, and his hit song I Miss You in a radio edit version previously available only on digital.
A descendant of the Burundian royal family, Bimeni fled his country aged 15 during the 1993 civil war. Following three attempts on his life, including seeing his classmates being murdered at school, he was given refugee status and fled to the UK where he’s remained ever since.
A resident of London since the early 2000s, Bimeni sings of love and loss, hope and fear with a conviction that comes from the extraordinary experiences life has thrown at him.
A production with classic 60s-sounding Motown and Stax-inspired grooves but Bimeni imbues these tales of love and loss with his tragic experiences making Free Me a deep soul soundtrack to his pained life: “When I sing I feel like I’m cleansing myself: music is a way for me to forget”.
“Moby & JP Bimeni have joined forces for an unreleased single entitled “Should Sleep”, the result is beautiful, lightly atmospheric and, above all, completely authentic.”

MARIANNE (FR)
“A guitar riff with a heady groove, screaming brass, a gospel organ, relentless rhythms and this incredible, moving voice.”
FIP (FR)
” Free Me, an elegant and suave debut album, old-fashioned sixties soul without frills… but not without thrills.”
PANAFRICAN MUSIC (FR)
“If the value of a soulman is measured by the incandescence of his voice and the number of tragedies he has faced in life, then the singer J.P. Bimeni, is undoubtedly a member of the club of great soul music performers.”
