Two years after the release of the best seller Buena Vista Social Club in 1997, which sold over eight million copies, a large number of the musicians who featured on the disc returned to the studio to record Ibrahim Ferrer’s first solo album. With Ry Cooder and Nick Gold producing, the album shifted 1.5 million copies – and one of the biggest voices in Cuban music today was discovered.
Authenticity and subtlety run alongside one another throughout the album which connects the rhythmical side of the Buena Vista Social Club with the sweetness of Ruben Gonzales’ piano. The golden voice of the Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, another figure from Buena Vista, rejoins Ibrahim Ferrer on Silencio, where they sing together in an exceptional duo. However, one discovers other musical influences here. This magnificent recording pays a nostalgic homage to the American big bands of the fifties and their emblematic ballads.
World Circuit is releasing this classic album for the very first time on double vinyl. Mastered at Abbey Road, it is pressed on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve alongside a beautiful 16 page booklet and download card.
