LIKE ISTANBUL, “ASK” IS A CROSSROADS BETWEEN EAST AND WEST, ENRICHED BY A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF CULTURES AND SENSATIONS.

Aged 15 Ozlem Bulut began her classical training close to home in Mersin, before moving to continue it in Istanbul. A scholarship allowed her to go to Vienna where she joined the prestigious Vienna State Opera and from there moved onto the Vienna Volksoper, where she was later given a full-time contract. It was in 2008 that she decided to found her group, “Ozlem Bulut Band” alongside Marco Annau (pianist and composer). The group developed (as a quartet or quintet) a musical environment in which jazz, a classical training and eastern rhythms could come together subtly.

Ozlem Bulut is probably the artist who best encapsulates modern oriental jazz. Her beautiful, soaring voice on her second album “Aşk” runs over jazzy but decidedly Eastern rhythms. Her powerful and dexterous voice masterfully executes the great demands she places upon it. This album is a tapestry, Ozlem weaves the two cultures together and in doing so she creates something beautiful. No one influence dominates, rather it is the subtle combination that impresses. With this album, Bulut manages to both throw off the conventional stereotype of Oriental music and astonish with the beauty of the Turkish language. She introduces new cultural and artistic influences into both language and music.

“Une voix claire, rompue aux envolées technique du chant lyrique (…) son jazz ottoman a du style et du charme”

“Claire et limpide, joliment nuancée, la voix possède un charme certain”
LE MONDE

LE NOUVEL OBS
