Radjha Ally, a powerful voice from Mozambique, delivers a vibrant debut album where mesmerizing rhythms and committed lyrics intertwine. On “Niinee,” he explores human connections, denounces injustice, and questions war. In this year marking 50 years of Mozambique’s independence, his work takes on a special resonance. Driven by his deep roots and unique voice, each track is as stirring as it is danceable.
Radjha Ally is a singer-songwriter from the province of Nampula in northern Mozambique. In the 2000s, he left the north and pursued musical studies in Maputo. In 2020, he became known to the general public by winning the television show Vozes Que Encantam.
Musically, Radjha Ally blends Afro and Afro-jazz influences, drawing inspiration from artists like Lokua Kanza, Zena Bacar (from the group Eyuphuro), Hortêncio Langa and Jimmy Dludlu, as well as pan-African icons such as Salif Keita and Youssou N’Dour. His debut album Niinee is heavily inspired by Tufu, an iconic rhythm from his region of Nampula. Of Swahili origin, Tufu is traditionally played at parties, weddings and religious ceremonies in the coastal Muslim communities of northern Mozambique. This musical style is characterised by intense percussion, powerful female choirs and pentatonic melodies. On Niinee, Radjha reinvents Tufu by fusing it with contemporary arrangements, creating a rich, danceable and deeply African sound identity. The album was recorded in Mozambique with musical production by Paulo Chibanga (Tumi & The Volume, 340ml, Bongeziwe Mabandla). The mixing was done by Fabien Girard from the French group Arat Kilo. Through his music and commitment, Radjha Ally has established himself as an essential figure in the new African music scene, combining modernity, identity and cultural roots. Niinee means ‘Come and dance’ in the Makua language, and with this album Radjha invites us to dance!
