La Notte della Taranta is anfestival held every summer in the Salento region of Puglia (the heel of Italy). Every year the festival invites a Musical Director to organize the final night, where an audience of over 150 000 are entertained in the open air. In 2010 and 2011 Ludovico Einaudi was handed this mantle. His task was to combine the traditional music of Salento – Taranta – with the sounds and rhythms of musicians from every corner of the world who had come to perform.
Taranta is trance music that cures and hypnotizes, and Einaudi thus chose to work with musicians who could understand these ancestral codes and traditions. “This album is the result born of a team effort: Mauro Durante introduced me to the music of Salento, Mercan Dede and the Secret Tribe brought a middle-eastern feel to the pizzicato rhythms, while the Africans JuJu (Justin Adams and Juldeh Camarah) and Ballake Sissoko developed the ancient ancestral side of the Taranta.”
Ludovico Einaudi reunited all the component parts of this team to record an album in which the spirit of the Taranta would be heard, but arranged with Einaudi’s customary elegance.
